CIA longtime operative Nathan Muir (Robert Redford) is on the brink of retirement when he learns his protégé Tom Bishop (Brad Pitt) has been arrested in China and sentenced to death for attempting to rescue a female activist. While Muir must use his knowledge of espionage and his old connections to try to save Bishop, the film explores loyalty, betrayal, and the personal intricacies and sacrifices involved in the spy game.
