Winner of the Academy Award for Best Picture and directed by the legendary Ridley Scott. Roman general Maximus (Russell Crowe), is chosen by Emperor Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris) to succeed him, much to the fury of the emperor’s erratic son, Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix). Commodus kills his father, seizes the throne, and arranges for the murder of Maximus’ family. Maximus is sold into slavery as a gladiator in the arena, where he gains more and more admiration from the crowds. As Maximus becomes a rising symbol of hope against the new emperor’s tyranny, he vows to have his vengeance against Commodus, in this life or the next.
