Written by musician Nick Cave and based on Matt Bondurant’s novel The Wettest Country in the World. The Bondurant brothers of Franklin County, Virginia, run a family bootlegging operation in 1931. Middle brother Forrest (Tom Hardy) is the brains of the operation, older brother Howard (Jason Clarke) is the brawn, and younger brother Jack (Shia LaBeouf) is the wild-card lookout. A violent war erupts when a sadistic lawman (Guy Pearce) from Chicago arrives, determined to shut down the Bondurants, while their girlfriends Maggie (Jessica Chastain) and Bertha (Mia Wasikowska), try to keep them alive.
